Lettuce Outredgeous

An intensely burgundy coloured and flavourful lettuce variety developed by famed plant breeder Frank Morton. This one grew well in 2011 and we look forward to eating it again. As lettuce spends half its time as a seedling it can be started as transplants: sow in trays 5 - 6 weeks before the last frost (we start lettuce plugs the first week of April) and harden off for 2 or 3 days before transplanting outdoors in May. Be sure to protect the plants if a severe frost is expected. By using transplants we have full heads of lettuce by June 1st. Alternatively, seeds can be direct seeded. Sow 1.25 cm (1/2 in) deep, 3 - 4 weeks before last frost. Thin as desired. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 4.5° - 26°C (40° - 80°F). Seeds will germinate in 3 - 15 days. The plants can bear light frost both early and late in the season. Row covers or cold frames can extend season in both spring and fall. Succession sow seeds every 3 weeks until mid-August for a continual harvest. You can also allow a plant or two to bolt for seed collection and sowing the following season. Harvest outer leaves from several plants or the entire plant early morning after dew has evaporated.
