Lactuca sativa 'Buttercrunch'
Family: Asteraceae

Buttercrunch Lettuce

As lettuce spends half its time as a seedling it can be started as transplants: sow in trays 5 - 6 weeks before the last frost and harden off for 2 or 3 days before transplanting outdoors. Be sure to protect the plants if a severe frost is expected. Alternately, seeds can be direct seeded. Sow 1.25 cm (1/2 in) deep, 3 - 4 weeks before last frost. Thin as desired. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 4.5° - 26°C (40° - 80°F). Seeds will germinate in 3 - 15 days. The plants can bear light frost both early and late in the season. Row covers or cold frames can extend season in both spring and fall. Succession sow seeds every 3 weeks until mid-August for a continual harvest. You can also allow a plant or two to bolt for seed collection and sowing the following season. Harvest outer leaves from several plants or the entire plant early morning after dew has evaporated.
